YSR Reddy dies in Chopper Crash

Chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, known better as YSR, died in a helicopter crash on Thursday after his helicopter carrying him went missing over a dense forest area dominated by Maoist rebels.

Bodies of Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and four others found, according to PTI,

The helicopter was traced in mangled state on Thursday on Rudrakonda hill, 40 nautical miles east of Kurnool.

The state-owned twin engine, seven-seater helicopter, Bell-430, he was flying in disappeared over the Nallamalla forest area in heavy rains at 9.35am on Wednesday, about an hour after it started, state officials said.

The chief minister was on his way from Hyderabad to Chittoor in Rayalaseema region in southern Andhra Pradesh on an official programme.

Reddy, 60, a powerful politician who had never lost an election during his 30-year political career, led the Congress party to victories in both state and Parliament elections in May, and was just months into his second term as chief minister.

He had won his first term as chief minister in 2004, defeating N. Chandrababu Naidu of the Telugu Desam Party, or TDP, son-in-law of the popular actor-politician and former chief minister N. T. Rama Rao.

Reddy, a second generation Roman Catholic Christian, was born on 8 July 1949 in Pulivendula, a small town in the stateĆ¢€™s Kadapa district. Before taking a plunge into politics in 1978, Reddy served as medical officer at CSI Campbell Hospital in Jammalamadugu in Kadapa district after graduating in medical science from the MR College of Gulbarga.

The four-time Lok Sabha member has served in various capacities both in the state government and in the Congress party. He served the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee as its president twice, once in 1983-85 and then in 1998-2000.

Between 1999 and 2004, he was the leader of the Opposition in the eleventh State Assembly. And earlier, from 1980 to 1983, YSR had also served as a minister in the state government, holding portfolios of rural development, medical and health and education.

Becoming chief minister was a long cherished dream for YSR. Prior to the 2004 state elections, he led an unprecedented 1,400km-long paadayatra covering all the backward areas in the state. He said he was on a mission to understand the ground realities of the people.

Death

Y. S. Rajasekhara's Bell 430 Chopper went missing on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at 9:35 am. Communication with Begumpet and Shamshabad Air Traffic controllers was disconnected with the chopper at 9:15 am. Rumors floated that he had safely landed on ground and escorted to Hyderabad. The chopper went missing in the dense Nallamala forest area which is naxal prone. Although there has not been much naxalite activity of late, the area has been pummeled by continuous rains, making the search mission very challenging. Several low altitude planes and Indian Airforce's Sukhoi-30MKI Aircraft with thermal imaging system were deployed, with an IL 78 on standby for Air-Air refueling.[4][16] Massive ground operations were also deployed for a search-and-rescue mission. [17]

The army and police from 6 districts were involved in the ground search. Andhra Pradesh's anti-Naxal forces were also deployed in the area, owing to their familiarity with the jungle terrain there. Local tribals from this part of the state, considered Naxal Country, also assisted with the search mission. Patrol parties also combed the Krishna river for the remains of the helicopter.[18]

ISRO's special aircraft were deployed for the searches. The area which was combed lies south of state capital of Hyderabad. The territory is huge, around the town of Atmakur, in the eastern part of the Kurnool district. The APACL also declared that the helicopter must have crash landed [19] .

Government officials confirmed that the Helicopter wreckage has been found on a hill top, 40 nautical miles from Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh [20]. It was confirmed on the morning of 3rd September that the bodies of the 5 occupants of the heliopter had been recovered. [21]

YSR Chopper crash

picked from reuters : Rescuers on Thursday found the helicopter of Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y.S.R. Reddy in tiger-infested jungle hills after it went missing for almost 24 hours but his fate was not known, officials said.

Reddy is an influential political leader who helped spur a Congress party-led coalition to victory in a general election in May.

Reddy was on a tour of a rural district when his Bell-430 helicopter went missing on Wednesday over a dense swathe of forest known to be a tiger habitat and a stronghold of Maoist rebels.

"We have located the helicopter, it is on top of a hill ... our helicopters are there. We are trying to find out if there are any survivors," Air Commodore Sagar Bharati said.

Home Ministry officials said the helicopter was damaged but they gave no details.

Some Indian news channels, quoting unidentified government sources, said the helicopter had been reduced to a mangled mass of metal and survivors were unlikely.

It was not known why the helicopter came down.

Officials launched a big search after the helicopter went missing, deploying hundreds of police, soldiers and tribesmen from the area. Air force fighters and a satellite were also used for thermal imaging of the area.
